Limehouse Case Study

This client’s baby girl was just reaching the stage where she could toddle about and so wanted to make the small terrace outside the nursery a fun play space.

At only just over 10 metres square the space was very cluttered with a collection of terracotta planters built up over time crammed into the tiny space. The baby meant that neither parent had the spare time to spend looking after it as they used to and being outside the nursery meant that working on it when the baby was asleep was now impossible.

Foxes Boxes was called in to transform the space whilst the clients were away on a holiday. Our brief was to introduce colour and movement as well as activities. Our first task was to completely clear the space. The walls were repainted in a fresh white and the trellis repaired or replaced then painted in lavender blue. A fine stainless mesh was also used to give a greater sense of privacy from neighbouring windows. We felt that decking was not the most appropriate flooring for little feet so we added exterior play carpet for a more child friendly surface.

Then the fun really began with bespoke wooden planters made to measure and painted in striking primary colours. Two bespoke window boxes with colourful hand painted children’s decorations made a feature of the wall space and all the plants used were child safe incorporating different textures, scents and flowering times for year round interest.

Additional elements we added were wind spirals for colour and movement, two outdoor cushions in colours to complement the planters, an exterior chalkboard as well as a sand pit for playing in, and finally planter decorations such as beaded dragonflies and butterflies.
