Wapping Case Study

This client was in the process of re-styling the whole interior of his apartment and wanted to update the exterior at the same time. The terrace had become rather cluttered and as part of it was a long and narrow space it was important to maximize the area to give as much space as possible for entertaining and relaxing outside.

The old small square slabs were taken up and replaced with a longer black slate tile to give a more elegant contemporary flooring. The sloping sections of the walls were levelled off to match the area around the table and create a long ledge that ran the entire length of the balcony. This ledge was also topped with the slate tiles. Finally the walls were repainted in a cream tone to give a fresh new look.

The client’s preference was for terracotta but as traditional terracotta troughs tend to come in relatively short lengths we did not want to make the planters feel crammed in and blocky. Therefore to ensure that the terracotta look was achieved but also with size and weight considerations in mind we sourced an extremely realistic fibreglass trough finished in a weathered terracotta look that we had made to size to fit the ledges.

To keep the simple and elegant lines a formal planting was preferable, the client keen on clipped buxus shapes. These were combined with simple white seasonal plants to keep the fresh feeling and sense of airiness.

Finally a simple irrigation system was added to ensure that maintenance was kept to a minimum and to keep the plants in the best of health.
