Highgate Case Study

This client’s contacted Foxes Boxes asking for a low maintenance balcony makeover that would brighten up the space and provide lots of greenery. But the main challenge was to update the old-fashioned floor tiles with something much more contemporary and easy to care for that would reflect their modern interior design.

We recommended the EcoDeck floor tile system as the most cost effective and speedy method of updating the flooring. First, the whole balcony was cleared and pressure washed to clean all the paintwork and provide a totally clean base for the new flooring. Then we used 80 Classic tiles, cutting them to size around the edges for a neat finish, to install a new and striking floor in an afternoon.

Then using bespoke galvanised planters, powder coated in a blue to reflect an interior colour as well as a neutral black, we used hardy plants to give a lush yet arhitectural feel, even working the client's precious climbing rose into the scheme, giving it a new lease of life with an obelisk to clamber up. The pom-pom clipped Buxus provided a quirky focal point for the whole scheme. Three longer troughs on the ledge housed a mixture of useful herbs and evergreen, whilst 6 shorter troughs were placed underneat, planted with Agapanthus and Heuchera, to provide colour without clutter.

Maintenance has been kept down to a minimum by using water tankers in each planter to maintain a constant water supply.

The key to the whole balcony was modernising the flooring: a transofmration that makes the space feel much bigger and far more contemporary.
